The following is the record of students & teachers working together to design a new game. The seed of an idea started after we were contacted by educators in other countries wanting to collaborate with us on a project in Minecraft. We asked ourselves if we could create a game that could be played asynchronously with other schools. MrMalm and I looked back over all of our school's Minecraft projects created by students and teachers. We wanted something as engaging as the Hunger Games organized by our students, and as compelling as the colonization unit we designed for 3rd grade. We played with the idea of what might happen if we built a world where resources were allocated only to specific areas. We wondered how that would change the way students played. Further inspired by observing John Hunter play the "World Peace Game", our seed began to take root in the idea of creating 3 nations, each holding the resources needed to construct a spaceship to escape certain doom. We agreed to set some simple parameters that would require each nation to work together. Having created the basic framework, we turn the design process over to students to work out details. With their help, the following game was created. We agreed to play the game over one week periods and then make make assessments and adjustments as required. We have 4 weeks of camp in which we can test the game. Will it work? Time will tell! ~Knowclue
EscapeCraft
An Epic Game of Survival!
Designed by MrMalm, Knowclue, Snowkit & SugarSummer 2012
The Story: Your planet is about to be destroyed by an epic meteor storm. While your outlook is grim, there is one small hope. If all the nations of your planet can find a way to share resources, it just may be possible to build spacecrafts to escape before it is too late. The World Science Council has identified a planet nearby that will be suitable to start a new life. There is no time to waste. You have exactly one week to evacuate your world before disaster will strike.
The better story:
ESCAPE!!!
By, Snowkit
You wake up to find yourself in your bed and smell something burning. You look out of your window and see a forest fire approaching you. You quickly turn your T.V. On and watch the news. It’s very grave news. You hear that there is a meteor storm heading to your planet called Snickerdoodle. Just are you are about to turn the T.V. Off but there is amazing news! There is a planet confirmed which is able to sustain life! The T.V. suddenly goes blank and you realize YOUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE!!!! As you dash out of your house you bump into people whose houses is also on fire. They are heading to the town center to see what they can do. The mayor of your town is having a meeting. You hear him say, “We are going to divide you into three! All of you will be responsible for helping to build one or more spaceships, which will get us to the new planet!"
At that a small paper lands on your head. You take it off your head and you see which group you're in. You look around as the town burns down and heads to your group. You already see meteors coming down…. The rest of the story is unclear. Will you live or die? wow! for the first time ever someone has quit the game! you might be thinking that its not a big deal, but the person that quit, was a PRIME MINISTER!!!! we are still thinking of a penalty for this nation but we aren't sure if this person will be allowed to quit!!! :o
Take 3 for story!
A twinkle in the night sky above you catches your attention, look up and see a small light. It seems to be geting bigger and bigger. You notice that as the light gets closer you start to feel the ground tremble and your skin starts to get hot. The light is mesmerizing and you can’t seem to take your eyes off of it. All of a sudden you realize what you are looking at. A meteor and it is headed straight towards you. You panic and start running around like a headless chicken. Soon the meteor collides and... You jolt awake and look around. Phew… No meteor… It was just a dream. You quickly jump out of bed, get dressed and head down stairs. After making yourself some cereal you turn on the television to watch some cartoons. Soon the episode it is interrupted. First there is a bunch of static, then something flashes across the screen in red letters, “Emergency Broadcasting” A news reporter starts talking, “And there is breaking news! It turns out there is an meteor big enough to wipe out all life on this planet heading straight towards us. Luckily there has been a planet located a planet 4 billion blocks away. It is called, Morrow. The three nations around the globe already took action and agreed to team up and get out of here. Each nation was known for the amount of redstone, iron or coal. We must all build spaceships to get out of here. Well, you lucky people are going to help us. Get to your town hall for more information. Now all eyes are watching the sky and a single question lingers in all of our minds. Will we live or die?"

For every block of iron you use to build your spacecraft, you are required to have 10 redstone and 5 coal for fuel
You can decide what tools and supplies to take to the new planet...
However, you must have enough food for each passenger to replenish 100 units of hunger
*Prime Minister chosen on the basis of who had the most experience playing Minecraft.
Post Game Evaluation
End Game Status: FAIL
Student Feedback:
Loved the game and wanted to play it again.
Felt the play time too short to accomplish the current goals.
Felt game was winnable
Loved the falling astroids (even though they caused damage) because it made game feel more real.
Some felt it was too difficult to do everything required (collect, build, get food...).
Suggested Changes:
Felt it was too difficult to gather food for 100 hunger units in such a short time. Recommended changing to 50 units
Hated asset report. Even though some agreed it was helpful, some wanted to do away with the report.

Game 4
(current as of 2/14/13)
Game 4 is currently being played during the EMS's After School Adventures program once a week on Thursdays with some modified rules. In this iteration the three nations are no longer allowed to communally build one single "EscapeCraft" to get all countries off the planet. Instead, all three nations must build their own fully compliant ship (defined by the game's rules) that will allow them to successfully fly all of their 4-6 team members away from the imminent destruction of their virtual home planet. This new rule set places a greater emphasis on trading limited world resources and will soon add serious penalties for nations that let team members die from starvation or any other causes.
